You ever wondered what exactly ‘Compassionate Conservatism’ looks like? Well, if your a woman, look no further. The GOP has just passed a law in Virginia requiring unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound for all women seeking an abortion. If you are unfamiliar with the procedure, the video above provides a good overview.
This is an excerpt from the Huffington Post by Tobias Barrington Wolff that describes the law -
The Republican Party has declared war on the dignity of women. This war on women is emerging as a centerpiece of the Republicans’ 2012 election strategy. Around the country, women are being told that they should feel shame about their bodies, their sexuality, and the choices that they make as adults. The latest assault is taking place in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the invasion of women’s bodies is so literal that it would qualify as farce if it were not chilling reality.
The Virginia legislature has passed a bill that will force women seeking an abortion to undergo a medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound. The mandated procedure requires that a probe be inserted into the woman’s vagina and manipulated around so as to produce a high-resolution picture of the uterus and surrounding organs — once again, for no medically sound reason. Governor Bob McDonnell has said that he will sign the bill. As part of the same package, the legislature also enacted a “personhood” law that would define life to begin at the stage of a fertilized egg, even before implantation, and hence would outlaw many forms of contraception and all abortions.
Kind of shocking? Not exactly what you envisioned when you hear the “Small Government”. Well, these are not your fathers’ Republicans – and this is just the beginning. If they are willing to introduce something this disturbing during an election year, image what they will do if they have the House and Senate.

Political wackos! I hope they are ALL voted out of office. Can you imagine a GOP-Free congress.
Rectal exams for all MEN receiving Viagra or Cialis or any erectile disfunction drug! Drug tests for all Congress and Senate Members also.
Just wondering if there is an abortion procedure that isn’t invasive? Seems like any instruments used for that procedure would be far more intrusive. And after 6 weeks an abdominal ultra sound can be used just as well. How many abortions are done prior to 6 weeks? But if an ultrasound is performed then the mother realizes it is a child and not just a clump of cells and less abortions are performed.
…and that it totally not the governments business. The government as envisaged by the founding fathers wasn’t that of a theocracy, where the religious beliefs of others were forced down your throat. It was a collection of FREE men with the right to worship or not. The far right can’t have both small government and legislated religious morality at the same time – freedom is freedom, not just when it is convenient.
since when has it been religious dogma to claim that life begins at fertilization? that’s a scientific fact, not “fax that came down from heaven.”
Pardon the pun,vjoseph…AMEN!
Can we just go with at least allow six weeks? Then require a normal ultrasound? And if I need an abortion prior to six weeks, I have to wait?
Really, uh JIM., SIR…you will never have to make the choice to wait or not, unless I am simply assuming that Jim is a woman’s name in this case. And here’s a revelation for you and others that seem to think that women don’t understand what an abortion means and need some religious and medical guidance to make a “good” decision, we know.
There are actual problems to be concerned with in our country. What women CHOOSE to do with their bodies is not one of them. These MEN in politics don’t know anything and they should keep their uneducated opinions out of it. Again I must ask, where are the WOMEN that actually know what’s going on….
I totally agree but unfortunately the GOP does not. When it comes to a woman’s body – THEY KNOW BETTER THAN WOMEN – and if they get elected and they are in the majority, they will pass LAWS to enforce this. Even basic CONTRACEPTION may be illegal in your state soon!?!
If the PERSONHOOD laws are able to go into effect, this opens up the door for women being criminally prosecuted for both miscarriages (manslaughter) and abortion (1st degree murder).
i’m not for the personhood law, but you really should really understand what it’s about, miscarriages will not be considered manslaughter. YES if you purposely DO something to cause a miscarriage (jump down a flight of stairs for instance) you can be charged with manslaughter…but you’d be charged with that REGARDLESS of the personhood law. So…there…natural miscarriages are perfectly legal with or without the personhood law. BTW, I live in mississippi, if it didn’t pass here, i can’t see it passing anywhere lol
